Huge barriers confront EU’s exit from Russian gas

European policymakers’ vow to cut the EU’s dependence on Russian gas by two-thirds this year is feasible, but will be “painful and costly,” said one analyst. While the EU’s dependence on Russian energy imports has been pointed out as a black hole in the West’s sanctions regime – if not outright hypocrisy – the war itself is ironically working as a kind of balancing factor.
