New Book, China's Ascendancy: Opportunity or Threat? and Book Reviews (1-8)
By Sheng-Wei Wang
April 1, 2008

Definitely a "must read" book! With interdisciplinary training and multicultural background, the author is well-placed to present this important thought-provoking and comprehensive volume on how China's ascendancy and adaptation to the American and Western world order has created the conditions for a peaceful transition towards geopolitical equilibrium rather than conflict. It is the first in the English literature to decisively refute the "China Threat" theory with new breakthrough insights and a wealth of data.

Book Reviews (1-8)

#1

"In this thought-provoking and comprehensive volume, scholar and activist Sheng-Wei Wang deftly weaves history, economics, and culture through the lenses of trade and contemporary diplomatic challenges. She provides a thorough and balanced demonstration of how China's adaptation to the American and Western world order on cultural, military, and political levels has created the conditions for a peaceful transition towards geopolitical equilibrium rather than conflict. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking a roadmap for global stability in the 21st century."

"This book is a 'must read' for anyone with an interest in China's incredible transformation in recent years. Sheng-Wei Wang's central thesis is that other countries, particularly the United States, should welcome China's economic rebirth and political re-emergence. In developing her argument, Dr Wang explores China's fluctuating fortunes from the birth of its civilization to the present. The book also looks at America's role in world affairs and methodically builds the case that China's prominent position in modern geopolitics poses no threat to the United States. This book is brim full of facts about China - focusing particularly closely on its developing relationships with other major powers. China's economic, political, military and cultural changes are recorded in considerable detail. This book examines the interrelationship of such diverse issues as the importance of Confucianism in tracing the story of China, through to the impact of modern trade, military and political issues such as the WTO and the Iraq War. Dr Wang set herself an ambitious task to dispel the myriad myths and fears about modern China and has succeeded admirably."

"China's Ascendancy deals with an important issue: - whether China's rise as a world power presents a threat or an opportunity to the United States?  Sheng-Wei Wang, in a well-organized and readable book, discusses the differing history and culture of China and of the United States and the resulting effects upon the development of their respective economies.   She also discusses the 'China Threat Theory' concerning China's major competitors, Japan and the United States, and why China does not constitute a threat to either country.  Sheng-Wei Wang recognizes that differences exist between China and the United States but believes that peaceful solutions, rather than conflict, will benefit not only China and the United States but also countries around the world."

"This is a very timely and significant work providing a comprehensive understanding of China's historical development - culturally, politically and economically.

This book makes a major contribution by explaining the opportunities for cooperation between 21st century's two most powerful nations and diffusing the negative threat rhetoric that could derail such critical cooperation.

I highly recommend Dr. Wang's valuable and useful book."

"With decades of experience in both cultures, Ms Wang is well-placed to give perspective on how the Chinese at large view the questions that plague modern U.S.-China relations."

"Countering the myth that China's rise is a threat to the world, China's Ascendancy is a penetrating analysis of the logic underpinning China's globalization. Written by a friend of the U.S., Wang's advice is both timely and pertinent to all those involved in conducting relations with China. Wang will also be of interest to historians studying the shift underway in Chinese perceptions of itself, Asia and the role of the West in crafting the modern world."

"This book decisively refutes the China threat rhetoric from multiple perspectives with new breakthrough insights and a wealth of recent data. It is of tremendous historical significance at a juncture when Americans increasingly view China as an economic and even a military threat. The author provides a sound approach for China's and the U.S.'s policymakers to move beyond today's complex yet solvable problems and to pave the way toward a healthy, shared global economic future. China's Ascendancy is definitely a 'must read'! I deeply admire Dr. Wang's courage and strong sense of social responsibility in taking on a project like this!"

"In her book, China's Ascendancy: Opportunity or Threat? Dr. Wang concludes after a comprehensive analysis comparing the history, culture and strengths of the two nations, that China will not be a threat to the U.S. in areas including military, politics and economy. Instead, she offers her proof that a rising China is advantageous to the balanced development of the entire world.

Her background and interdisciplinary training has enabled her to present this in-depth viewpoint with a global characteristic. The book is not only written for the American readers, but also serves as a valuable reference for those who do research in politics, economy and business administration in China."
